Country Living

Our summer break began 2 weeks ago and we have been busy outdoors. Living in the country is peaceful and beautiful if you can get past the critters :0)

It's gopher time and Hunter has taken over for Abby as chief gopher catcher. Our local water company pays a dollar a tail so the kids are pretty motivated(so is their dad). We have trapped 10 already this spring.

Abby and her dad found this robin's nest and relocated it. We are building a shed and she nested in the corner within two days of putting on the roof and layed an egg. We now need to finish our project and so she had to go. I have always love the blue of the robin's egg.

Living in the country has been a pleasure for me with a few exceptions... snakes and spiders really cause me greif. I have learned to spray the black widows and we only see a few each year. We get a good sized snake near the house about once a year. Our cats and dog usually keep them away, but this nice bull snake was in our garden. Cline found this one or it would'nt still be alive for the picture.

We have a lot of robins so it is a wonder we have any strawberries at all. That and Lily loves them green or red!!! We kept our eye on this beauty and picked it before the birds. We recently put a net on top of the berries to keep the birds out, but it works great for the kids too. We made four batches of Strawberry freezer jam this week, but we had to pick them from Grandma's patch because all of ours were eaten before they made it into jam.

We hatched a few birds that won't eat our strawberries and the kids were so fasinated with them. It is most amazing to watch a baby bird peck it's way into this world. So our summer is off and running and I am enjoying it's simple pleasures.
